Opis

The Combined Prehistoric Expedition (CPE) was founded by Fred Wendorf in 1962, at the beginning of the UNESCO-sponsored International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia. It is a multinational research body active in northeastern Africa and jointly sponsored during most of its activities by the Institute for the Study of Earth and Man of Southern Methodist University, Dallas, USA; the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Sciences; the Geological Survey of Egypt; and a number of scientific institutions and foundations. Subsequent to Fred Wendorf's retirement in 1999, Romuald Schild assumed directorship of the CPE until 2007 when Michał Kobusiewicz took charge of the mission. Expedition's scientific program focuses on problems relating to cultural and socio-economic structuring of Stone Age societes of North Africa and their paleoenvironments. During a half-century of research, the CPE conducted extensive fieldwork in the Main Nile Valley, in northern and eastern Sudan and Nubia, in the deserts of Egypt and Sinai, and the Ethiopian Rift Valley. Since the mid-nineties, the field research of the Combined Prehistoric Expedition has concentrated of the Megalithic Neolithic Ceremonial Center of Nabta Playa, Western Desert of Egypt, and its environs. Many of the Bunat El Asnam (Megalith Builders) of Nabta Playa were laid to rest in the unique cemeteries of Gebel Ramlah portrayed in the present volume.
